I've talked to many parents over the years that had no idea what was in all the paperwork that CPS kept sending them. They go into court winging it. They come out in tears and shock over what just occurred.
Getting organized is probably the best thing you can do to help yourself. If CPS is in your life or has taken your child you are going to get a lot of paperwork. What's in that paperwork is what is going to be put in front of the judge. Therefore it is very important that you keep all of your papers together, organized by date and to know what is written in them. This will help you to respond appropriately and defend yourself when the time comes.
Tips for Getting Organized
- Get a 3 ring binder and a hole puncher.
- Put every piece of paper that you get from CPS in this binder in the order that you got them. Do this from day one and continue it until your case is closed.
- Read it.
There are many benefits to doing this. First of all you'll know what's coming at you. There will be far fewer surprises. Also it will give you the opportunity to prepare a better defense because you'll have time to produce evidence.
